From the CHORAL JOURNAL
Editor EDITORIAL BOARD
EDITOR
I recently spoke to a retired member on the phone
who had a question about receiving her Choral Journal AMANDA BUMGARNER
in the mail. As I wrote down her information in order ACDA National Office
to look further into the mailing issue, I could feel her 405-232-8161 (ex. 205)
passion for choral music in the way she spoke about her abumgarner@acda.org
connection to ACDA and her work as a music teacher. MANAGING EDITOR
Amanda Bumgarner She taught K-12 music for over forty years, and when
I asked her if she had any advice for teachers working RON GRANGER
with young singers today, she quickly replied, “Teach students how to ACDA National Office
read, write, and perform music. They will have a great foundation.” 405-232-8161
I asked her if she had any favorite composers or pieces she enjoyed rgranger@acda.org
performing, and she listed several, including Russian composer Sergei
Rachmaninoff. She was delighted when I told her that the November/ EDITORIAL BOARD
December issue featured an article about Rachmaninoff. As we work on SEAN MICHAEL BURTON
these issues each month, I never forget that there are ACDA members seanburtonmusic@gmail.com
who will be reading the articles, and I hope everyone can find at least
one topic of interest within these pages. There is, however, always room MARQUES L. A. GARRETT
for more—more research, more perspectives, more application. I hope marques.garrett@unt.edu
you will consider contributing to ACDA publications in some way this MICHAEL PORTER
year, whether that is through an article, a review, or even reaching out to michaelporter2@boisestate.edu
encourage someone you think has a subject of interest.
This issue in particular includes a range of topics: from assessment WILLIAM SOUTHERLAND
recommendations, considerations for all-state selection, and vibrato; to williamgsoutherland@gmail.com
thoughts on retirement and reflections from a well-known American DEBRA SPURGEON
choral composer. dspurg@olemiss.edu
Finally, a note about the cover. I thought it would be fun to give a
glimpse “behind the scenes” with our cover designer, Efrain Guerrero. WILLIAM WEINERT
He has been designing the Choral Journal cover for over twenty years, and wweinert@esm.rochester.edu
he wrote the following about this month’s design: GISELLE WYERS
wyersg@uw.edu
I know this is a little bit different than usual covers. I’ve been
waiting for a good reason to do a colorless image, and I think the COLUMN EDITORS
op art element looks cool without having to compete with a shot
of color somewhere. I was hoping that the arrows convey the MICAH BLAND
idea of straight tones vs. undulating vibrato waves. The op waves mbland1613@gmail.com
might tickle the eyes a little, but that almost makes it interactive.
